There are features other `smith's incorporate into their guns that he does not believe. His work is less expensive than most other `smith's and for a very good reason. Now his true-believers act as if he invented the concept and say things like "nobody does it quite like Gary". I reckon that was until he realized he could make money on them. He was also very negative on Old Model Blackhawks and the. Old Model parts aren't exactly growing on trees. Every other gunsmith I know of returns your old parts, which is why he asked. After he berated a poster for asking for his old Old Model Blackhawk parts back, I was done. I was on the verge of ordering an Ultimate Bisley and potentially booking an Africa hunt with his crew. When that happens, there's no limit to the things he'll say. Watched him lose his temper on the message board on several occasions and go off on potential customers. Which is exactly how his fans react when you say anything bad (but truthful) about him. Gary seems to be a very friendly and helpful feller as long as you agree with everything he says and don't question him. "Action" or "tune" jobs (usually a done-deal in sending to anyone), caliber conversions, blackpowder cylinder chamfer, forcing cone angle, scalloping, hammer swaps, barrel shortening, different or re-finishes, engraving, etc. Otherwise he can do any of the usual/unusual items the others above do as well. Among his many, the "gunfighter"-a rounded butt (but not to extent of a birdshead) done off the original XR3 Red (or XR3 if an old 3 screw) plowhandle form is one of GR's main calling cards. Far less wait and expense with either of these two latter routes. but "just" rebuild I would go more local with a quality smith (with Ruger SA experience) or even send back to Ruger. But, like Bowen, Harton, Gallagher, Clements and other top Rugersmiths, I would not send unless having extensive custom features done "to make the $ and wait worthwhile," unless money and/or time is (relatively) no object. I have not directly, but a friend had one.
